Science and spirituality have been pitted against each other as opposites for ages. Honestly, though, they are way more compatible than people allow themselves to believe. Recently there’s been a shift to overcome this misconception, and as part of the shift, psychologists have looked into the science behind spirituality and the soul. Not surprisingly, spirituality is really good for people and science can back this up. Being spiritual can help people in a number of positive ways. Additionally, science has explored the potential of people having souls! Also, science can be a super spiritual experience for people, as renowned scientist Carl Sagan discussed throughout his works.
Spirituality, Souls, and Science
Psychologists have found that spirituality is connected with both happiness and health. Being spiritual or religious can help people have happier, healthier lives. The body, mind, and spirit are connected, allowing your spiritual beliefs to affect your feeling of well-being. Having a spiritual center can help you feel hopeful, make connections with others, and feel optimistic, all of which contributes to your overall happiness. Spiritual wellness obtained through meditation, prayer, and other practices helps keep us calm and even reduces stress, which in turn helps us stay healthy. Psychologists agree: spirituality is a good thing.
While you may have heard of some scientists trying to disprove the idea that people have souls, evidence in their favor is lacking. Meanwhile, physicists have taken up the mantle to show that not only do people have souls, the universe may have a consciousness as well. Actually, there’s been talk that everything has a consciousness, a term called panpsychism. Also, the multitude of accounts of NDEs (near-death experiences) have paved the way for further investigation of the potential of an afterlife.
Science may be used as an attempt to discount spiritual experiences, but it can also be utilized as a way to support them. Science may seem to contradict spirituality, but it can also be compatible with spirituality. Perhaps it is most beneficial for humans if we agree that science has the ability to promote spirituality while spiritual beliefs can push science to evolve.
Science is Spiritual
You know that feeling when you look up at the night sky with the realization that you’re just a small spec on a little planet in a huge solar system, and you just feel that special something? That’s a spiritual experience, and the knowledge provided to us from science makes it even more surreal. Carl Sagan once wrote, “Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual.”
I honestly couldn’t have said it better myself.
People use spiritually as a psychological tool because it makes us feel really good. Science is able to show us that being spiritual is good for us. Plus, science helps us experience spirituality, such as having a connection with the universe. So, the next time you hear someone promoting the spiritual-scientific divide, you’ve got the tools to help enlighten them! Science and spirituality are good for one another and we benefit the most when the two aren’t at odds.
